Metal framing stock

Metal Stud Cutting Stock Planner | Minimize Offcuts

Estimate how many standard metal-stud stock lengths are needed for one repeated cut size, including a user-entered kerf. The result shows usable yield, total stock consumed and estimated offcut.

Stock and cut requirements

This calculator handles one repeated cut length. Mixed cut lists require a different optimization model. Verify actual cutting equipment kerf and usable end conditions.
Enter stock length, cut length and quantity.

How metal stud stock optimization works

Usable stock per bar = stock length − kerf × (pieces per bar − 1)
Pieces per bar = maximum whole pieces satisfying the cut and kerf constraint
Bars = ceiling(required pieces ÷ pieces per bar)

Why a simple division can be wrong

If the cut process removes material, a bar that appears to fit three pieces geometrically may no longer do so after accounting for repeated cuts. Kerf therefore remains explicit.

Offcut interpretation

Offcut is not automatically waste. It becomes useful stock when it can satisfy another valid cut without compromising the application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the planner handle multiple cut lengths?

No.

Does kerf reduce yield?

Yes, when enough cuts are made.

Can offcuts be reused?

Potentially.

Is utilization the same as zero waste?

No. A high utilization percentage can still leave unusable short pieces.
