Landscape Fabric Roll Calculator — Rolls, Coverage and Overlap

Estimate the number of landscape-fabric rolls needed for a bed or planting area while accounting for strip overlap, trimming and unavoidable cutting loss.

This model assumes the rolls are laid in parallel strips across the bed and that overlap occurs between adjacent strips. Change the roll orientation if your installation method uses a more efficient direction.

How landscape fabric roll quantity is calculated

First calculate the bed area. Then determine how many fabric strips are necessary to cover the bed width after deducting the specified overlap from each shared edge.

Usable strip width = roll width − overlap contribution

Because the first strip does not overlap itself, the exact strip count is based on the first full width plus subsequent usable increments.

Why roll orientation can change the order

A square bed may require a similar quantity in either direction, but a long narrow bed can have a meaningfully different cut pattern depending on whether the roll runs along the long or short dimension.

The comparison in the calculator gives you a quick procurement check. The actual best layout still depends on planting islands, trees, corners and obstacles.

Worked example

A 12 m × 6 m bed is 72 m². With 2 m wide fabric and a 100 mm overlap, the first strip covers 2 m and each later strip effectively adds 1.9 m. Four strips cover the width, so the nominal fabric run is 48 m. After a 7% cutting allowance, the planning length is 51.36 m, which requires three 25 m rolls.
