Landscape Edging Length Calculator — Get the Right Linear Quantity

Turn a measured garden, path or landscape boundary into a practical edging length and piece count without hiding the boundary assumption.

For curves and irregular beds, measured perimeter is more reliable than approximating the boundary as a rectangle.

Rectangle perimeter formula

Perimeter = 2 × (length + width)

When the actual boundary is already measured, there is no need to recreate it from a simplified shape. Enter the measured perimeter directly.

Why boundary convention matters

An edging profile has physical thickness. Decide whether your measured boundary represents the installed centerline, inner face or outer face and use that convention consistently across the takeoff.

Worked example

A 12 m × 4 m bed has a 32 m perimeter. With 4% allowance, the planning length is 33.28 m. At 2 m per piece, 17 pieces are required.

What this does not include

Stakes, connectors, corner pieces and special fixing requirements depend on the selected edging system. Treat the linear quantity as one part of the complete material basket.
