Safe winding technique
- Crown fully in (position 0) for winding on most watches
- Screw-down crowns: unscrew first, wind, then screw down firmly
- Wind slowly — no fast spinning
- Manual: stop when you feel firm resistance (do not force)
- Automatic: stop when resistance softens/slips at full wind
- Prefer many small turns over aggressive cranking
These are practical ranges, not factory lab counts. Barrel size, gearing, and current power level change the real number.
If the crown feels gritty, sticky, or suddenly loose, stop and get it checked — don’t “finish the count.”
Quick reference ranges
Most manuals from stopOften \~20–40 gentle turns
Most automatics from stopOften \~15–30 turns until slip, then stop
Daily top-up (running watch)Often \~5–15 gentle turns
Long-reserve manualsCan need more turns — wind to resistance, not to a forced number
