How the Metal Requirement Is Calculated

The model works backward from finished weight. First it adds the estimated sprue or runner requirement, then it increases the starting requirement to account for the specified process loss.

Casting System = Finished Weight × (1 + Sprue %)

Starting Requirement = Casting System ÷ (1 − Process Loss %)

Why a Finished Piece Is Not the Same as the Starting Charge

Production systems may require additional metal for gates, runners and other handling losses. Some of that material may later be recovered, so accounting should distinguish initial charge from permanent material loss.

Use Historical Production Data

For planning, replace generic allowances with your own historical rates for the jewellery design, alloy and process. That makes the estimate more useful for actual production control.

This is a mass-planning model and does not prescribe a casting or manufacturing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does starting metal requirement mean?

It is the estimated material needed before the modeled sprue and process losses occur.

Can recovered sprue be reused?

Potentially, depending on the production process and material controls.

Does this calculate purity?

No. It calculates mass requirement.
