Gold Jewellery Metal Loss Formula

Gross process loss is measured against the starting metal weight. This is different from gold purity loss: changing alloy composition can change the weight without meaning that the same amount of gold was lost.

Weight Lost = Starting Weight − Final Weight

Loss % = Weight Lost ÷ Starting Weight × 100

Recovery % = Final Weight ÷ Starting Weight × 100

Why Gross Metal Loss and Fine-Gold Loss Are Different

A jewellery process can remove solder, alloy components, polishing material or other non-gold mass. For a more precise precious-metal reconciliation, assay-based fine-gold calculations should be performed separately.

Using the Result for Workshop Reconciliation

Track consistent starting and ending weighing points for similar jobs. Large changes in the calculated loss rate can then be investigated rather than hidden inside an overall monthly average.

The optional value estimate treats the entered purity as constant; actual fine-gold reconciliation may require assay results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is weight loss the same as gold loss?

No. Gross mass can include alloy and non-gold material.

Can I estimate the value of the lost metal?

Yes, using the optional purity and spot price.

Can the result be negative?

A final weight greater than the starting weight indicates that additional material entered the measured stream and should be investigated.
