Wastage is a user-entered allowance. Actual jewellery pricing practices vary by seller and market.

How Gold Jewellery Cost Is Calculated

Fine Gold = Weight × Karat ÷ 24
Base Gold Cost = Fine Gold × 24K Price
Wastage Cost = Base Gold Cost × Wastage %
Pre-Tax Cost = Gold + Wastage + Making + Stones + Other
Final Cost = Pre-Tax Cost + Sales Tax

This structure makes it easier to see which part of the price comes from gold and which part comes from workmanship or other charges.

Wastage Is Not the Same as Making Charges

Wastage and making charges are separate concepts. A seller may use a wastage percentage as a pricing allowance while also charging for workmanship. Not every seller uses the same method.

Enter the percentage quoted for the specific jewellery transaction. Do not assume one universal wastage percentage.

Why This Is Different From Jewellery Value

A value calculator estimates what an existing piece may be worth. A cost calculator instead builds up the cost of producing or purchasing an item from component costs.

Example Cost Breakdown

Suppose 20 grams of 18K jewellery is priced using a 24K gold price of $100 per gram, with 5% wastage, $200 making charges, $150 gemstone cost and 5% sales tax.

Fine Gold = 20 × 18 ÷ 24 = 15 g
Base Gold Cost = 15 × $100 = $1,500
Wastage = $1,500 × 5% = $75
Pre-Tax Cost = $1,500 + $75 + $200 + $150 = $1,925
Tax = $1,925 × 5% = $96.25
Final Cost = $2,021.25

Important Limitations

The calculator does not determine actual retailer pricing, tax law or manufacturing costs. Enter the pricing terms applicable to the transaction.

Tax rates vary by jurisdiction and product, so the tax field should be adjusted or set to zero when appropriate.
