Floor coating material planning

Epoxy Floor Material Calculator

Calculate the mixed epoxy required for a floor and split it into resin and hardener using the manufacturer's mixing ratio. Keep coverage, coats, loss and kit size visible so the procurement estimate can be checked.

Epoxy system inputs

Use the coating manufacturer's coverage and mixing ratio. The resin-to-hardener ratio in this tool is a weight ratio, not a volume ratio.
Enter floor area and the product's coverage and mix ratio.

The mixed quantity is a coverage-based estimate. Actual consumption changes with substrate profile, porosity, film thickness, roller technique, temperature and the selected epoxy system.

How epoxy floor quantity is calculated

Start with the manufacturer's coverage or consumption rate. Multiply the floor area by the number of coats, then divide by coverage to obtain the theoretical mixed-material requirement.

Mixed material = area × coats ÷ coverage
Planning material = mixed material × (1 + allowance)
Resin = planning material × resin ratio ÷ total ratio
Hardener = planning material × hardener ratio ÷ total ratio

Why the mix ratio must be respected

Epoxy systems are formulated around a specified resin-to-hardener relationship. Changing that proportion can affect curing and performance. This calculator therefore treats the stated ratio as a product input rather than assuming a universal 1:1 system.

Worked example

For 100 m², two coats and a theoretical coverage of 5 m²/kg, the mixed requirement is 40 kg. With a 10% planning allowance, 44 kg of mixed system is required. At a 2:1 weight ratio, this corresponds to about 29.33 kg resin and 14.67 kg hardener.

Coverage versus thickness

Coverage numbers are not interchangeable between products. One system may be designed for a particular wet or dry film thickness while another has a different solids content. Use the selected product's technical data rather than comparing generic litres or kilograms per square metre without a compatible basis.

Substrate condition can dominate consumption

Concrete porosity, grinding profile and surface irregularity can increase first-coat demand. Repairs, crack treatment and local build-up can create additional material requirements that a simple area model does not capture.

Important limitations

This tool estimates material quantity. It does not determine whether a floor is ready for coating, select primer systems, specify moisture limits, establish cure times or certify coating thickness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should the ratio be by weight or volume?

Use exactly the basis specified by the manufacturer. This calculator uses weight ratio.

Does a second coat double the material?

It doubles the theoretical coverage demand when both coats use the same consumption rate.

Why add application allowance?

To reflect practical losses and site variability.

Can I use the tool for a different epoxy product?

Yes, when you enter that product's actual coverage and ratio.
