Stone-care material planning

Stone Sealer Quantity Calculator

Estimate how much natural-stone sealer you need from surface area, manufacturer coverage, coats and an explicit application allowance. Keep product yield and container size visible for procurement.

Sealing inputs

Use the actual product coverage for the stone and application method. The absorption field is a planning adjustment, not a laboratory measurement.
Enter stone area and product coverage.

Actual sealer consumption depends on stone porosity, substrate condition, application method, dwell time, wiping and product instructions.

How much stone sealer is needed?

The starting point is the product's published coverage. Divide the area by coverage to obtain litres for one coat, then multiply by the number of coats.

Base litres = area × coats ÷ coverage
Planning litres = base litres × (1 + absorption adjustment + application allowance)

The two allowances are shown separately in the tool so they remain assumptions rather than hidden factors.

Why natural stone changes the answer

Marble, granite, limestone, travertine and other stones can behave differently when a sealer is applied. Surface texture, porosity, finishing method and the specific sealer chemistry can alter practical consumption.

Worked example

For 120 m², 12 m²/L coverage and two coats, the base requirement is 20 L. With a 10% absorption adjustment and 12% application allowance, the planning quantity rises to 24.4 L. At 5 L per container, five containers would be required.

Why the product sheet should control

Published coverage should be interpreted together with the product's instructions. Some products distinguish between theoretical spread rate and practical coverage, and some require different application methods for porous versus dense stone.

What this calculator does not decide

It does not determine whether a stone should be sealed, whether a particular sealer is chemically suitable, the required cure time or the maintenance interval. Those decisions belong to the stone supplier, coating manufacturer and project specification.

Common sealer estimating mistakes

Using a generic coverage rate, ignoring stone absorption, counting a second coat without multiplying consumption, and treating a theoretical spread rate as guaranteed site coverage can all lead to under-ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should manufacturer coverage be used?

Yes. Product-specific coverage should normally be the controlling procurement basis.

Does porous stone use more sealer?

It can.

Can I calculate containers?

Yes.

Does this tell me which sealer to buy?

No.
