Where Is Your Electricity Waste Opportunity?

Estimate the cost of avoidable electricity use caused by unnecessary runtime, excessive operating power or equipment that stays on when it does not need to.

Waste scenario

Use this when only part of the identified waste can realistically be eliminated.

What counts as an electricity waste opportunity?

Waste is electricity consumption that provides little or no useful service for the energy spent. Examples include unnecessary runtime, equipment left energized during unoccupied periods, avoidable heating or cooling, compressed-air losses and inefficient operating schedules.

Why the load alone is not enough

A 5 kW load running for ten unnecessary minutes is a very different opportunity from a 500 W load running all night. Waste analysis therefore combines power and duration.

Measure before investing

The best opportunities are supported by measurements or operating records. A measured load profile can reveal whether the assumed waste is continuous, intermittent or tied to a specific schedule.

Use avoidable percentage realistically

Some waste can be eliminated completely while other consumption is partly necessary. The avoidable percentage gives the analysis a way to reflect that difference rather than assuming 100% savings.

Simple payback as a screening tool

Payback divides improvement cost by annual savings. It is useful for an initial screening, but it does not capture financing, maintenance, equipment life or changes in electricity prices.

FAQs

Is all electricity consumption above a baseline waste?

No. Higher consumption may be necessary because of changes in service, occupancy, production or weather.

Can this find the cause of waste?

No. It quantifies an opportunity. Root-cause investigation requires equipment and operational data.

Should fixed electricity charges be included?

Usually not for an energy-only waste estimate because a kWh reduction may not reduce fixed charges.

Can a battery reduce electricity waste?

It can shift or reduce certain grid purchases, but storage losses mean it does not automatically eliminate the underlying energy waste.
