How appliance energy cost is estimated

For a constant-power estimate, electricity use is power in watts divided by 1,000, multiplied by operating hours and operating days. Annual energy is then multiplied by the electricity price to estimate operating cost.

Why wattage alone is not enough

A high-power appliance may run briefly, while a lower-power device may operate continuously. Ranking by watts alone can therefore produce a very different result from ranking by annual energy consumption.

Real appliances cycle

Refrigerators, air conditioners and other thermostatically controlled equipment do not necessarily draw their rated power continuously. Treat the inputs as an operating assumption and replace them with measured data where available.

How to use the ranking

Focus detailed measurements on the appliances near the top. Scheduling, maintenance, controls, insulation, operating changes or replacement may then be evaluated based on their actual potential impact.

FAQs

Is nameplate wattage the same as actual consumption?

No. It is often a rating rather than a continuous measurement of real-world use.

Can I include standby energy?

Yes. Represent it through appropriate daily hours or a separate measured load assumption.

Why rank by annual cost?

Annual cost translates energy consumption into a directly comparable financial figure.

Can this be used for commercial equipment?

Yes, provided the operating assumptions reflect actual use.
