Electrical Conduit Burial Material Calculator
Estimate the surrounding material volume for buried conduit by calculating a rectangular burial envelope, subtracting conduit volume and adding a transparent purchase allowance.
Burial geometry
Burial-material volume
Burial-material methodology
The calculation approximates a material envelope below and above the conduit across the full trench width. The conduit itself occupies cylindrical volume, so that volume is removed from the material envelope.
Envelope volume = trench length × trench width × envelope height
Conduit volume = pipes × π × (diameter ÷ 2)² × length
Net material = envelope volume − conduit volume
Planning material = net material × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)
Example
For a 90 m run, 0.6 m trench width, 110 mm conduit, 100 mm bedding and 250 mm top zone, the envelope is 0.36 m high. For two conduits, the net surrounding-material volume is approximately 17.5 m³ before the purchase allowance.
Why conduit volume is deducted
Counting the whole rectangular envelope as fill can overstate the actual surrounding material when the conduit occupies a meaningful fraction of the space.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can several conduits share the trench?
Yes, but the model treats them as parallel cylinders inside one rectangular envelope.
Can the bedding depth be zero?
Yes.
Can this determine the right trench width?
No. Enter the approved trench width from the project detail.
