Drainage Channel Length Calculator — Section Count & Run Planning
Turn a straight drainage run or rectangular perimeter into a channel length, section count, joint count and procurement allowance. The calculation keeps the geometry separate from hydraulic design so the purchasing quantity is easy to audit.

How the drainage channel calculation works
For a straight run, the required geometric length is simply the measured run. For a rectangular perimeter, the length is the perimeter: twice the long side plus twice the short side.
Rectangular perimeter = 2 × (L + W)
Planning length = geometric run × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)
Sections = ceiling(planning length ÷ section length)
Why section count is rounded up
Channel sections are discrete products. If a project needs 25.2 m and each section is 3 m, 8 sections provide 24 m and are insufficient, so 9 sections are required.
What this does not establish
This tool does not size channel hydraulic capacity, grate class, outlet capacity, slope, sump arrangement or discharge requirements. Those depend on site drainage design and the selected channel system.
Worked example
A rectangular perimeter is 12 m by 8 m and the channel product is supplied in 3 m sections with a 5% allowance.
Planning length = 40 × 1.05 = 42 m
Sections = ceiling(42 ÷ 3) = 14 sections
Approximate joints between sections = 14 − 1 = 13
Common planning errors
Ignoring corners: a perimeter installation is not the same as one straight run. Corners may require special pieces rather than ordinary channel sections.
Using gross product length instead of usable length: joints, end details and cutting can affect the effective run.
Mixing quantity planning with hydraulic sizing: the right number of sections does not prove that the selected channel can carry the expected drainage flow.
Hiding the allowance: a visible percentage makes procurement decisions easier to review and change.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many sections are needed for a 30 m run?
It depends on the supplier section length. Divide 30 m by the usable section length and round up.
Does this include corner pieces?
No. Corners, outlets, end caps and other accessories should be taken off separately.
Can the channel run be in feet?
Yes. The calculator converts the entered dimensions to metres internally.
Is the allowance mandatory?
No. It is an explicit procurement planning assumption.
