Roof drainage sizing check

Roof Drain Count Estimator — Area, Rainfall & Drain Capacity

Estimate how many roof drains are required from roof area and rainfall intensity, using a drain capacity that you supply from the intended product or design basis.

Drain quantity inputs

Drain capacity must come from an appropriate product or hydraulic design basis. The calculator does not infer capacity from drain diameter.
Enter roof area, rainfall intensity and effective drain capacity.

Roof drain count formula

Runoff flow Q = C × i × A ÷ 3600
Where Q is L/s, i is mm/h and A is m².
Design flow = Q × (1 + margin ÷ 100)
Required drains = ceiling(design flow ÷ effective capacity per drain)

Why drain capacity must be explicit

Hydraulic capacity is affected by drain geometry, water depth, outlet connection, head conditions and system configuration. A generic capacity hidden inside a calculator would be difficult to verify and could be inappropriate for the selected product.

Why roof drainage may need more than one control

Overflow drainage, low points, secondary drainage paths and roof geometry can affect final layout independently of the simple total-area calculation.

Worked example

For an 800 m² roof, 75 mm/h rainfall intensity, runoff coefficient 0.95, 8 L/s drain capacity and 10% margin:

Q = 0.95 × 75 × 800 ÷ 3600 = 15.83 L/s
Design Q = 15.83 × 1.10 = 17.42 L/s
Drains = ceiling(17.42 ÷ 8) = 3 drains

Important limitations

This result is a quantity estimate from simplified hydrologic inputs. It does not determine exact gutter flow, ponding depth, outlet hydraulics, emergency overflow performance, structural loading or compliance with a specific building or plumbing code.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I enter a product's published capacity?

Yes, provided the capacity is appropriate to the design condition and system configuration.

Does roof area include only the plan area?

Use the catchment area basis required by your project method.

Why round up?

Drains are discrete units.

Can the calculator account for existing drains?

Yes. It shows the total estimated requirement and a comparison with the number already planned.
