Downpipe fabrication

Downpipe Offset Length Calculator — Straight Sections & Allowance

Estimate the straight material represented by a downpipe offset, including two vertical legs, a horizontal bridge, fitting-related allowance and a procurement buffer.

Offset geometry

The offset model treats the entered leg and bridge lengths as straight material lengths. Actual elbow centerline takeoffs depend on the selected fitting geometry.
Enter the three offset dimensions.

Offset material formula

Base length = upper vertical + horizontal bridge + lower vertical + fitting/cut allowance
Net project length = base length × offset count
Planning length = net project length × (1 + procurement allowance ÷ 100)

Why fitting allowance is separate

The geometric centerline of an offset fitting is not always equal to the nominal visual offset dimension. Keeping a user-entered fitting allowance makes the calculation auditable and lets it match the selected fabrication detail.

Planning versus fabrication

The result is useful for material takeoff. Individual cut lengths should still be checked against the actual elbow centerline, socket depth, slip length and installation configuration.

Worked example

For a 0.8 m upper leg, 0.45 m bridge, 0.7 m lower leg and 0.15 m fitting allowance:

One offset = 0.8 + 0.45 + 0.7 + 0.15 = 2.10 m
Six offsets = 2.10 × 6 = 12.60 m
With 8% procurement allowance = 13.61 m

Common mistakes

Do not treat the visible offset as the complete developed length when elbows consume straight-run material. Do not assume every offset uses identical fitting geometry. Keep repeated assemblies separate when field conditions vary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the calculator choose elbow sizes?

No.

Can the legs be zero?

Yes, although a conventional offset will normally contain both vertical and horizontal components.

Can I calculate many offsets?

Yes.

Is the allowance required?

No. It is a visible procurement planning assumption.
