Suspended grid planning
Ceiling Grid Main Runner Calculator: Length & Layout
Estimate the number and total length of main runners needed for a suspended gypsum ceiling. Keep runner spacing, edge offsets and cutting allowance explicit.
Grid dimensions
Spacing and edge treatment must follow the selected ceiling grid system. The calculator estimates quantity and does not establish structural compliance.

Main runner quantity method
Runner intervals = ceiling((cross dimension − 2 × edge offset) ÷ spacing)
Runner lines = intervals + 1
Net runner length = runner lines × run length
Planning length = net length × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)
Runner lines = intervals + 1
Net runner length = runner lines × run length
Planning length = net length × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)
Why edge offsets matter
Starting runner lines directly at a wall may not match the chosen perimeter arrangement. Keeping edge offsets explicit makes the layout easier to inspect and modify.
Ordering versus theoretical length
The theoretical length is a geometric quantity. Cutting, splicing and standard stock lengths can produce a different order quantity, so the allowance should not be treated as a precise cutting optimization.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this calculate cross tees?
No. Main runners are the focus.
Can I add cutting allowance?
Yes.
Does it determine safe spacing?
No. Use the selected ceiling-system requirements.
Can the runner direction be changed?
Yes. Swap the room's run and cross dimensions.
