What this estimator is designed for
Cable pulling is a distinct field operation. A project may know the cable quantities but still need a duration estimate for crew planning, shutdown coordination and daily work packaging. This tool turns route length and productivity assumptions into a schedule-oriented time estimate.
Calculation
Base crew-hours equal cable length divided by entered productivity, multiplied by the route difficulty factor. A planning allowance is then applied. Crew-days are estimated by dividing the resulting crew-hours by the entered working hours per crew-day.
The result is crew time, not total person-hours. That distinction is important when comparing the estimate with a crew's actual work schedule.
Worked example
A 200 m pull at 50 m per crew-hour with a difficulty factor of 1.2 needs 4.8 crew-hours before allowance. With a 15% allowance, the estimate becomes 5.52 crew-hours, or 0.69 crew-days at an 8-hour crew-day.
Why pulling duration differs from installation labor
A cable installation scope can include material handling, route preparation, pulling, dressing, fixing, identification and other work. This page isolates the pulling-duration component so it can be used in sequencing and work-package planning.
Using several pull runs
Each row is estimated independently and summed. The model assumes the listed runs are sequential for the total duration. If multiple crews work concurrently, project scheduling software or a separate work-plan calculation is needed.
Limitations and safety
Productivity is project-specific. Actual pulling time can change with route geometry, cable handling, preparation, access and installation conditions. No pulling-tension or safety determination is made here.
Frequently asked questions
Does crew size change the calculated crew-hours?
The estimator reports crew-hours based on the crew operating as a unit. Crew size is retained for work-planning context rather than multiplying crew-hours.
Can two pulls happen at the same time?
The total displayed duration assumes sequential work. Parallel crews should be scheduled separately.
Does this estimate labor cost?
No. It estimates time only.
