Why temperature can matter to batteries

Battery performance can vary with operating temperature. A planning model can be useful when a backup or storage system will operate under conditions different from the reference data used for its nominal rating.

Temperature difference

The calculator compares actual temperature with the selected reference condition and applies the user-defined sensitivity.

Capacity versus power

Capacity and power are separate characteristics, so they are modeled with separate sensitivity inputs.

Use measured data when available

Battery manufacturers may provide temperature-dependent performance curves. Those data are preferable to generic assumptions when selecting equipment.

Limitations

Temperature effects can interact with discharge rate, battery state of charge, chemistry and thermal management.

Frequently asked questions

Can hotter temperatures increase the modeled result?

Yes when the selected sensitivity model is allowed to apply in both directions. The sign of the entered sensitivity determines the assumed direction.

Does this predict battery damage?

No. It is a performance sensitivity model, not a thermal safety or degradation diagnosis.
