Transformer Capacity Expansion Planner — Test Future Demand Before It Arrives
Model existing transformer loading plus staged future equipment additions and identify the point where your selected capacity-review threshold is crossed.

How expansion planning works
The existing peak demand is combined with staged future additions. The result compares cumulative demand with the transformer rating and with your selected review threshold.
Reserve versus threshold
A reserve is an explicit planning cushion. The tool keeps it separate from the review threshold so you can see how much of the transformer's rating you are intentionally leaving uncommitted.
Why staged additions are useful
A facility may add HVAC, EV charging, machinery or process equipment over several years. The sequence can reveal when a replacement, parallel transformer or other expansion study becomes relevant.
Worked example
A 1,000 kVA transformer with a 650 kVA current peak and an 80% review threshold has a modeled review level of 800 kVA. An additional 200 kVA would bring the scenario to 850 kVA and cross that threshold.
Limitations
This calculator does not determine transformer selection, thermal life, impedance, fault performance, parallel operation or utility requirements.
Frequently asked questions
Can I schedule additions by year?
Yes. Use the month field to stage additions up to 120 months ahead.
Does exceeding the threshold prove an upgrade is required?
No. It identifies a point that deserves further investigation.
Can future loads be removed?
Yes. Delete the row or set up a different scenario rather than forcing an addition into the model.
