Reinforcement mesh mass

Steel Mesh Weight Calculator

Estimate reinforcement mesh weight per square metre and total sheet mass from wire diameter and spacing. Use different wire sizes and spacings in the two grid directions when the mesh is not symmetric.

Mesh inputs

Enter wire sizes and spacing in both directions.

The model treats the mesh as an ideal repeating grid and does not add special perimeter wires, laps, chairs or accessories.

Steel mesh weight formula

For one wire direction, the number of wires crossing one metre is approximately 1,000 ÷ spacing in millimetres. The mass of one metre of wire is based on its circular cross-sectional area and steel density.

Wire kg/m = πd²/4 × density
Mesh kg/m² ≈ wire A kg/m × (1000 ÷ spacing A) + wire B kg/m × (1000 ÷ spacing B)

Worked example

For 6 mm wires at 200 mm spacing in both directions, each direction contributes roughly 0.889 kg/m², producing a theoretical grid mass of about 1.78 kg/m² before edge-wire and fabrication adjustments.

Why manufacturer tables remain important

Commercial welded mesh can include edge wires, special longitudinal or transverse wires, sheet dimensions, overlaps and fabrication details. A manufacturer product table can therefore differ from the idealized repeating-grid estimate.

Procurement use

The tool is useful for sanity-checking a mesh schedule or converting a known mesh geometry into a first-pass steel mass. It should not replace the identified product's technical data when purchasing a specific mesh designation.
