Gusset Plate Geometry Formulas

For a right-triangular gusset, the gross area is calculated from the base and height.

Triangle Area = ½ × Base × Height

For a rectangular gusset, the base and height define the gross plate area.

Rectangle Area = Base × Height

For a trapezoidal gusset, the base and top base are averaged before multiplying by height.

Trapezoid Area = ½ × (Base + Top Base) × Height

Steel Weight Calculation

The calculator converts the selected dimensions into metres and calculates the plate volume from area and thickness.

Plate Volume = Plate Area × Thickness
Plate Weight = Plate Volume × Steel Density

The default steel density is 7,850 kg/m³. The density can be changed when a different material is being estimated.

Bolt Hole Deduction

When hole deduction is enabled, the area of the entered circular bolt holes is subtracted from the gross plate area for the preliminary net material calculation.

One Hole Area = π × (Hole Diameter ÷ 2)²
Net Area = Gross Area − (Hole Count × One Hole Area)

The hole deduction is intended for material estimation. It is not a structural net-section calculation.

Edge and Bolt Spacing Checks

The calculator compares the entered edge distance and bolt spacing against the available gusset dimensions. These are preliminary geometry checks only.

Actual minimum edge distances, bolt-hole dimensions and spacing requirements depend on the applicable structural design standard, bolt type, plate thickness, fabrication tolerances and connection forces.

Important Limitations

Final gusset geometry, thickness, bolt layout, welds and connection capacity must be checked by a qualified structural engineer against the actual loads and applicable design standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Steel Gusset Plate Calculator calculate?
It calculates preliminary gusset geometry, plate area, net area, estimated steel weight, quantity and bolt-hole layout information.

Which gusset shapes are supported?
The calculator supports right-triangular, rectangular and trapezoidal preliminary plate geometry.

Can I estimate several gusset plates at once?
Yes. Enter the number of identical plates to calculate combined material requirements.

Does the calculator deduct bolt holes?
Yes. Hole deduction can be enabled or disabled using the Hole Deduction option.

Does this calculator determine gusset plate thickness?
No. Thickness is an input. Structural design is required to determine the appropriate thickness.

Can I use the result as a fabrication drawing?
No. The result is intended for preliminary estimating and layout planning only.
