How spare-wheel compatibility is checked

A spare wheel is more than a circular piece of metal. The wheel must interface with the hub, clear the brake assembly and work with the intended tyre and vehicle requirements.

Bolt pattern

The bolt pattern must match the vehicle hub configuration or use a manufacturer-approved solution specifically intended for the application. A visually similar wheel is not enough.

Centre bore

The wheel centre bore must be compatible with the hub. An exact match provides direct dimensional alignment. A larger bore can require an approved centering method where the application permits it. A smaller bore cannot simply be forced onto a larger hub.

Brake clearance

Wheel diameter and wheel design both influence brake clearance. Diameter alone cannot prove that a spare will clear the caliper.

Tyre compatibility

A spare wheel can physically bolt on and still use an unsuitable tyre. Verify the spare tyre's dimensions and application for the vehicle.

Temporary-use considerations

Some vehicles use temporary spare systems with specific operating restrictions. Follow the exact vehicle instructions rather than assuming a full-size spare and temporary spare have the same requirements.

FAQs

Is matching bolt pattern enough?

No. Centre bore, brake clearance, wheel geometry and tyre compatibility also matter.

Can a larger centre bore work?

Potentially, but only when the appropriate centering method is verified for that exact application.

Does the same wheel diameter always clear the brakes?

No. Internal wheel shape and brake geometry can differ.
