Solar curtailment recovery

Solar Battery Curtailment Recovery Calculator — Recover More PV Energy

Estimate how much otherwise-curtailed solar energy a battery could capture and later deliver to a site or export pathway.

Curtailment recovery depends on timing. This model represents annual curtailed energy through a user-defined event capacity and capture fraction rather than claiming all curtailed energy is available for charging.

How battery curtailment recovery is estimated

The calculator estimates an energy capture ceiling from battery capacity multiplied by the number of useful recovery events. It then compares that ceiling with annual curtailed energy and applies the capture fraction and round-trip efficiency.

Capture ceiling = usable battery capacity × recovery events
Recovered energy = min(curtailment, capture ceiling) × capture fraction × efficiency

Why the capture fraction matters

A battery may not be empty exactly when curtailment occurs. Solar availability, existing battery state of charge, charge power and operating controls all limit how much curtailed energy can actually enter storage.

Financial interpretation

The energy value converts recovered electricity into a screening value. Compare that value with storage investment, cycling impacts and other operating benefits before making a project decision.
