Soil Swell Calculator
Convert an in-place excavation volume into an estimated loose volume after digging. Compare several swell scenarios so haul planning is not based on one hidden assumption.

Loose excavation volume
How soil swell is calculated
The swell percentage represents the relative increase from the in-place state to the assumed loose state.
Loose mass = loose volume × loose density
Truck loads = ceiling(loose volume ÷ truck capacity)
Scenario sensitivity
A 400 m³ excavation at 15% swell becomes 460 m³ loose, while at 30% swell it becomes 520 m³. That difference can materially change haul requirements.
Why swell should be documented
Using a visible swell assumption makes an earthwork estimate easier to review. Replace the planning assumption with project-specific geotechnical or measured information when available.
Swell versus shrinkage
Swell addresses expansion after disturbance. Shrinkage addresses changes when loose soil is placed and compacted. They are related earthwork concepts but are not interchangeable percentages.
Limitations
This is a planning conversion. It does not determine a soil-specific swell coefficient and does not replace field measurements or geotechnical assessment where precision matters.
