How to play Road Race Online
You drive the car near the bottom of the screen while the road scrolls toward you. Hold the gas to speed up to 220 km/h, steer between slower traffic and stay on the tarmac: the grass caps your speed at about 82 km/h and the barrier spins you out if you hit it fast. Every 2,000 metres you pass a checkpoint that changes the scenery, from the Coastal Highway to the Pine Forest, Desert Run and Neon City, and the road gets narrower and busier.
Traffic is not all the same. Plain cars hold their lane, weavers change lanes every couple of seconds, trucks are long and slow, and red swervers drift toward you when you sit behind them. Green fuel cars are friendly: drive into them to collect fuel, time or points.

Game modes
Classic fuel
The arcade original idea: your tank drains while you drive. Collect fuel cars (+25%), reach checkpoints (+10%) and avoid crashes (−6%). The run ends when you are out of fuel and roll to a stop.
Time Attack
No fuel, just a clock: 50, 45 or 40 seconds on Easy, Normal or Hard. Checkpoints add 30, 25 or 20 seconds, fuel cars add 5 and crashes cost 2.
Zen cruise
No fuel and no timer. Crashes only cost speed, so it is ideal for learning lines, practising near-miss combos and unlocking garage colours.
The Daily challenge uses a road and traffic pattern seeded from today’s date in Classic mode on Normal, so everyone playing on the same date gets the same layout. Your best daily score is saved separately.
How scoring works
Score = metres driven + bonus points Near-miss points = 50 × combo (combo 1 to 5, so 50 to 250 per pass) Checkpoint = +500 points every 2,000 m Fuel car = +100 points Speed (km/h) = pixels per second ÷ 14.4 × 3.6 (14.4 px = 1 game metre)
A near miss counts when you pass a car with under 18 px (about 1.25 game metres) of side gap above 100 km/h. Another near miss within 3 seconds raises the combo; a crash or a 3-second gap resets it. Each near miss also adds 18% nitro. Nitro recharges by 3% per second, burns 38% per second and lifts top speed from 220 to 290 km/h, so a full bar lasts about 2.6 seconds.
Worked example
A Classic run ends at 3,200 m. You chained three near misses (50 + 100 + 150), crashed, then chained three more (50 + 100 + 150): 600 points. One checkpoint at 2,000 m adds 500 and two fuel cars add 200. Score = 3,200 + 600 + 500 + 200 = 4,500.
Three strategies compared
Time Attack pacing
At an average 180 km/h (50 m/s) the first 2,000 m takes 40 seconds. Starting with 45 s on Normal you reach the checkpoint with about 5 s left, then gain 25 s. Average speed matters more than top speed, so avoid crashes.
Classic fuel range
On Normal a full tank drains in about 45 seconds. At a steady 200 km/h (55.6 m/s) that is roughly 2,500 m without pickups; each fuel car adds about 11 seconds of driving. Fuel cars spawn about every 1,100 m.
Combo hunting in Zen
Five quick near misses earn 50 + 100 + 150 + 200 + 250 = 750 points and almost refill nitro (5 × 18% = 90%). Practise threading between weavers on wide sections before trying it in Classic.
What makes a run harder
- Stage: each checkpoint adds traffic (up to five extra cars) and narrows the road by up to 40 px.
- Difficulty: Easy keeps 5 base cars on the road, Normal 7 and Hard 9; fuel drains 1.6, 2.2 or 2.8% per second.
- Road shape: curves shift the road up to 60 px left or right every 900 px of track; trucks only appear where the road is wide.
- Swervers appear from stage 2 onward and follow your lane when you are close behind them.
Common mistakes
- Holding full speed into a crowded, narrow section. Braking briefly costs less than a spin-out, which drops you to 40% of your speed.
- Saving nitro forever. It recharges, and near misses refill it, so use it on clear straights.
- Following a red swerver closely. Overtake it quickly or drop back.
- Ignoring fuel cars in Classic. Missing two in a row usually ends the run.
Tips to beat your best
- Look at the top of the screen, not at your car, so you can plan a lane two cars ahead.
- Near misses are safest on cars you pass slowly; aim for a gap of about half a car width.
- After a crash you get about 1.6 seconds of protection (the car blinks). Use it to recover speed.
- Drive in Zen to unlock the Gold car at 3 km total distance, then Teal, Violet, Ice and Midnight.
Limitations
Road Race Online is an arcade game, not a driving simulator: speeds and distances are game units, there is no real vehicle physics and no online multiplayer or global leaderboard. Records live only in this browser. Sound requires a tap or key press first because browsers block autoplay.
Frequently asked questions
Is Road Race Online free to play?
Yes. Road Race Online is free and runs directly in your web browser with no download, account or sign-up. Your best scores, unlocked car colours and achievements are saved only in your own browser storage.
How do I play the car racing game on a phone?
On touch screens, on-screen buttons appear over the road: steer with the left and right arrows, and use Brake, Nitro and Gas on the right. Auto-accelerate is switched on by default for touch devices so you can focus on steering.
What counts as a near miss?
A near miss is scored when you pass a car with less than 18 pixels (about 1.25 game metres) of side gap while driving above 100 km/h without touching it. Each near miss within 3 seconds of the last raises your combo, worth 50 points per combo level up to 250.
How does fuel work in Classic mode?
In Classic mode the tank drains about 2.2 percent per second on Normal (1.6 on Easy, 2.8 on Hard). Green fuel cars add 25 percent, each checkpoint adds 10 percent and a crash costs 6 percent. When the tank is empty the engine cuts out and the run ends once the car stops.
Is this the original Road Fighter game?
No. Road Race Online is an original game inspired by classic top-down arcade road racers such as Road Fighter. It has its own graphics, sounds, modes, scoring and code, and is not affiliated with the makers of Road Fighter.
Will the game run smoothly on older phones?
It is built for speed: one canvas, pre-drawn car sprites, fixed-step physics, a capped pixel density and an automatic pause when the tab is hidden. Very old devices may still slow down, so closing other tabs helps.
Are my high scores saved online?
No. Scores, daily challenge results, total distance and achievements are stored only in this browser on this device. Clearing browser data or switching devices starts a fresh record. You can share a score with the Share button.
