Metal Machining Time Calculator – Cutting Time & Production Time

Estimate machining cutting time from cutting length and feed rate, or calculate feed rate from RPM, feed per revolution and feed per tooth. Add non-cutting time to estimate production time.

What the calculator includes

For CNC work, actual cycle time can differ because of rapid movements, acceleration, deceleration, tool changes, approach distances, retracts, probing and machine control behavior.

Machining time formulas

Basic machining time
Time = cutting length ÷ linear feed rate.
Turning / drilling feed rate
Feed rate = RPM × feed per revolution.
Milling feed rate
Feed rate = RPM × number of teeth × feed per tooth.
Total cutting time
Single-pass time × number of cutting passes.

Machining time examples

Turning
800 RPM × 0.20 mm/rev = 160 mm/min feed. A 160 mm cutting length takes about 1 minute.
Milling
3,000 RPM × 4 teeth × 0.05 mm/tooth = 600 mm/min feed. A 100 mm cutting length takes about 10 seconds.
Drilling
600 RPM × 0.12 mm/rev = 72 mm/min feed. A 50 mm cutting distance takes about 41.7 seconds.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate machining time? Divide cutting length by linear feed rate. If feed rate is not directly known, calculate it from RPM and feed per revolution or feed per tooth.

How do I calculate turning time? Calculate feed rate as RPM × feed per revolution, then divide cutting length by that feed rate.

How do I calculate milling time? Calculate table feed as RPM × number of cutter teeth × feed per tooth, then divide cutting length by table feed.

How is drilling time calculated? For a simplified estimate, calculate feed rate as RPM × feed per revolution and divide drilling distance by the resulting feed rate.

Does machining time include tool changes? Basic cutting time does not. The calculator lets you add an estimated non-cutting allowance.

Can I calculate multiple-pass machining time? Yes. Enter the number of cutting passes and the calculated cutting time is multiplied accordingly.

Is this an exact CNC cycle-time calculator? No. It is a planning estimate. Actual CNC cycle time depends on machine motion, acceleration, rapid rates, tool changes, programming and setup.

What units can I use? The calculator accepts metric and imperial length, feed and diameter-related inputs where applicable, then normalizes them internally.
