Calculate theoretical machining dimensions for external or internal threads, including pitch, lead, TPI, thread height, radial depth and approximate minor diameter.
The V-thread equations are theoretical geometric references. Actual standardized thread profiles include crest/root truncation, tolerances, clearances and other geometry.
| Thread | Pitch | TPI | Single-start lead |
|---|---|---|---|
| M3 × 0.5 | 0.50 mm | 50.80 | 0.50 mm |
| M4 × 0.7 | 0.70 mm | 36.29 | 0.70 mm |
| M5 × 0.8 | 0.80 mm | 31.75 | 0.80 mm |
| M6 × 1.0 | 1.00 mm | 25.40 | 1.00 mm |
| M8 × 1.25 | 1.25 mm | 20.32 | 1.25 mm |
| M10 × 1.5 | 1.50 mm | 16.93 | 1.50 mm |
| M12 × 1.75 | 1.75 mm | 14.51 | 1.75 mm |
| M16 × 2.0 | 2.00 mm | 12.70 | 2.00 mm |
| M20 × 2.5 | 2.50 mm | 10.16 | 2.50 mm |
What is the difference between pitch and lead? Pitch is the spacing between adjacent thread turns. Lead is the axial distance traveled in one revolution. For a single-start thread they are equal.
What is the theoretical depth of a 60° thread? For an ideal sharp 60° V profile, the theoretical height is approximately 0.866025 times the pitch.
What is the lead of a 2-start M10 × 1.5 thread? The lead is 1.5 × 2 = 3.0 mm per revolution.
What is the lead of a 3-start M12 × 2 thread? The lead is 2 × 3 = 6 mm per revolution.
Can this calculate external thread minor diameter? Yes, it provides a theoretical approximation based on the selected thread profile and target thread percentage. Actual production limits must come from the applicable standard.
Can this calculate internal thread dimensions? It can provide theoretical profile dimensions, but internal thread minor diameter and pitch-diameter limits are governed by the particular thread standard and tolerance.
Can I use this for CNC lathe programming? The calculated pitch and lead can help establish the basic feed relationship, but the actual CNC threading cycle, depth-of-cut strategy and tool geometry depend on the control and machine setup.
Does this replace a thread chart? No. It is a calculation and education tool. Standard thread charts remain necessary for exact dimensional limits and tolerances.
