Masonry Surface Area Calculator
Calculate the gross wall face and net exposed masonry area after deducting doors, windows and other rectangular openings. Use the result as a clean basis for material, coating or quantity estimates.

Net masonry surface area
Net surface area formula
Net masonry area = gross area − opening areas
Planning area = net area × (1 + allowance)
The opening deductions should correspond to actual doors, windows or other voids on the measured wall face.
Worked example
A 15 m × 3.2 m wall has 48 m² gross area. If doors remove 4.2 m² and windows remove 8.6 m², the net exposed masonry area is 35.2 m².
Why net area matters
Using gross area for every material estimate can overstate masonry quantities when large openings are present. Establishing the net exposed area first makes later material calculations more transparent.
Openings are not the whole masonry quantity
Jambs, sills, lintels, reveals, returns and other three-dimensional details may create additional masonry surfaces even though they are omitted from a simple face-area calculation.
Limitations
This calculator handles planar wall faces and opening deductions. It does not produce a full three-dimensional takeoff or account for architectural details.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate net wall area?
Multiply wall length by height and subtract the areas of all openings on that face.
Can I deduct multiple windows?
Yes, by summing their areas before deduction.
Does this include reveals?
No.
Can I use net area for brick quantity?
Yes as a starting area basis, followed by unit and joint geometry.
Can irregular openings be used?
Enter their measured area separately.
