Stone fabrication edge planning

Granite Edge Length Calculator

Calculate the total granite countertop edge length that may require polishing, profiling or other finished-edge work. Separate exposed perimeter from internal cutout edges and price it using your own fabrication rate.

Countertop edge inputs

Enter only edges that actually form part of the finishing scope. A wall-contact deduction prevents a full perimeter from being treated as exposed edge work.
Enter the exposed and internal edge lengths.

What counts as a finished granite edge?

Edge work can include exposed countertop fronts, island perimeters, returns, waterfall ends and sometimes internal cutout edges. The exact scope depends on the fabrication drawing and selected edge profile.

External edge = exposed run + island perimeter + returns − wall-contact deduction
Total edge work = external edge + included cutout edge

Why internal cutouts need separate treatment

A sink or cooktop opening may have an internal perimeter that requires polishing or another treatment. It should not automatically be deducted from the slab's external edge calculation. Treat it as its own fabrication line item.

Worked example

If an 8 m countertop run, 6 m island perimeter and 1.2 m of returns are finished, while 5 m contacts walls, the external finished edge is 10.2 m. Adding 2.2 m of finished cutout edge produces 12.4 m of edge work.

Why thickness does not change plan length

Changing a slab from one thickness to another does not change the two-dimensional perimeter length. It can, however, change the complexity and unit price of an edge profile, so thickness should be handled in fabrication specifications rather than mixed into the length formula.

Pricing boundary

The optional rate is user-supplied. It is only a multiplication of edge length by the entered rate and is not a current market-price database.

Common edge-measurement errors

Double-counting returns, forgetting an island side, deducting a sink opening when it should be finished, or including hidden wall edges can all distort a fabrication takeoff.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should sink edges be included?

Include them when the fabrication scope requires finished cutout edges.

Does an island usually have exposed edges?

Often yes, but follow the project drawing.

Can I estimate edge-finishing cost?

Yes, using your own price per metre.

Does thickness change edge length?

No, not the plan-view length.
