Gold Wire Weight Formula

A solid round wire is modeled as a cylinder. Diameter is converted to radius before applying the circular cross-sectional area.

Radius = Diameter ÷ 2

Volume = π × Radius² × Length

Weight = Volume × Density

Fine Gold = Total Weight × Purity ÷ 100

What This Calculator Assumes

The wire is treated as a uniform solid cylinder. Tapered wire, hollow wire, coatings, surface irregularities and dimensional tolerances require a more specific model.

Density and Gold Alloys

The default 19.32 g/cm³ corresponds to elemental gold. Jewellery alloys may require another density for accurate mass calculations. 2

For production inventory, use the measured or verified density of the actual alloy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does wire diameter matter a lot?

Yes. Because cross-sectional area depends on radius squared, small diameter changes can materially affect weight per unit length.

Can this calculate alloy wire?

Yes, using the appropriate alloy density and purity.

Can I enter length in metres?

This version uses millimetres; convert other units before entering them.
