Compare two gold prices and calculate the exact price gap between them.
Enter an original and comparison price using the same gold-price unit to

optionally, the monetary impact for a specified quantity of gold.
What Is the Gold Price Difference?
Gold price difference is the numerical gap between two gold prices. It can
be useful when comparing two quotations, two dates, two dealers, or an
earlier and later market price.
The simplest calculation takes the absolute value of the difference
between the two prices.
Absolute Difference = |Second Price − First Price|
The absolute difference does not indicate which price was higher. That is
why this calculator also reports the directional change separately.
Directional Gold Price Difference
When the order of the prices matters, subtract the first price from the
second price.
Directional Change = Second Price − First Price
A positive result means the second price is higher. A negative result means
the second price is lower. A zero result means both prices are identical.
Gold Price Difference Example
Suppose one gold quotation is 2,000 per troy ounce and another is 2,500
per troy ounce.
|2,500 − 2,000| = 500
The absolute gold price difference is therefore 500 per troy ounce. The
directional change is +500 because the second price is higher.

Gold Price Difference vs Percentage Change
These measurements answer different questions. Price difference tells you
how many currency units separate two prices. Percentage change tells you
how large that movement is relative to the starting price.
Percentage Change = ((Second Price − First Price) ÷ First Price) × 100
For example, a difference of 500 has very different significance when gold
moves from 1,000 to 1,500 compared with a move from 5,000 to 5,500.

Calculating the Difference for a Gold Quantity
A price difference becomes more meaningful for a specific quantity of
gold. If the price gap is 100 per gram and the quantity is 10 grams, the
theoretical value difference is 1,000.
Quantity Value Difference =
Absolute Price Difference × Quantity
The calculator can handle quantities expressed in grams, kilograms, troy
ounces, tola, pennyweight or grains. The quantity is converted to the
selected gold-price unit before the calculation.
Comparing Gold Dealer Prices
Gold buyers and sellers may quote different prices for the same nominal
weight. A price difference calculator can help identify the numerical gap
between two quotations.
When comparing real offers, however, make sure the quotations have the same
purity, weight unit, transaction direction and conditions. A buying quote
and a selling quote are not necessarily directly equivalent.
A price difference alone does not determine which offer is better. Check
purity, fees, premiums, taxes, making charges and the actual amount you
receive or pay.
Comparing Historical Gold Prices
Historical gold prices can be compared using the same method. For example,
you can compare an earlier gold price with a later quotation and determine
the numerical movement between them.
For a meaningful historical comparison, keep the price unit and purity
basis consistent. If the two prices come from different markets or
currencies, currency conversion may also be required before comparison.
Gold Price Units
The calculator supports common precious-metal weight units. The two prices
must use the same selected unit for the direct difference calculation.
| Price Unit |
Equivalent Weight |
| Per Gram |
1 gram |
| Per Kilogram |
1,000 grams |
| Per Troy Ounce |
31.1034768 grams |
| Per Tola |
11.6638125 grams |
| Per Pennyweight |
1.55517384 grams |
| Per Grain |
0.06479891 grams |
Why the Purity Basis Matters
Two gold prices should represent comparable material. A quotation for
fine gold and a quotation for lower-karat jewellery gold can differ because
the gold content differs.
For example, a 24K gold price per gram should not automatically be compared
directly with a 22K gold jewellery price per gram if the purpose is to
measure market movement in fine gold.
Make sure both prices represent the same purity basis before interpreting
the difference.
Absolute Difference and Directional Difference
The calculator provides both because they serve different purposes.
Absolute difference
Shows the size of the gap without saying which price is higher.
Directional change
Shows whether the second price is higher or lower than the first.
Percentage change
Expresses the directional movement relative to the first price.
Important Limitations
This calculator does not retrieve live gold-market prices. Both prices are
entered manually.
It does not determine whether a quotation is fair, genuine or competitive.
The calculation only measures the mathematical difference between the
supplied numbers.
Actual gold transactions may include taxes, dealer spreads, premiums,
discounts, refining costs, making charges and other expenses.
For jewellery, the quoted final price may also include workmanship,
gemstones and design-related costs that are not represented by a simple
gold price difference.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you calculate the difference between two gold prices?
Subtract one price from the other. For an absolute difference, use the
absolute value so that the result is always positive.
What is the absolute difference between gold prices?
It is the numerical gap between two prices without considering which price is
higher.
Can I compare gold prices per gram?
Yes. Select Per Gram and enter both prices using the same purity basis.
Can I compare gold prices per troy ounce?
Yes. Select Per Troy Ounce and enter both comparable quotations.
What is the difference between gold price difference and percentage change?
Price difference measures the numerical gap. Percentage change measures the
movement relative to the first price.
Can I calculate the monetary impact of a gold price difference?
Yes. Enter an optional gold quantity and the calculator will estimate the
value difference for that quantity.
Can I compare prices in different gold weight units?
Both prices should use the same unit for a direct comparison. Convert one
price first if the units differ.
Does this calculator use live gold prices?
No. The prices are supplied manually by the user.
