Calculate the theoretical value of pure gold from its weight and a supplied
fine-gold price. This calculator is designed specifically for fine or
near-pure gold rather than jewellery alloy valuation. Enter the weight in
grams, kilograms, troy ounces, tola, pennyweight or grains, then provide
the applicable pure-gold price.
What Is Pure Gold?
Pure gold is gold with an extremely high concentration of elemental gold.
Commercial bullion is commonly described using fineness rather than only
karat. Fine gold may be marked 999, 999.9 or another high-fineness
specification depending on the product.
A fineness number expresses the number of parts of gold in 1,000 parts of
material. Therefore, 999 gold has a nominal gold content of 999 parts per
1,000, while 999.9 gold has 999.9 parts per 1,000.
Gold fraction = Fineness ÷ 1000
The calculator uses the selected fineness to determine the actual gold
content represented by the entered weight.
How Pure Gold Value Is Calculated
The calculation begins by converting the entered weight into grams. This
provides a common base regardless of whether the user entered grams,
kilograms, troy ounces, tola, pennyweight or grains.
Weight in grams = Entered weight × Unit conversion factor
The calculator then applies the selected fineness.
Actual gold content = Total weight × Fineness fraction
Finally, the actual gold content is multiplied by the pure-gold price per
gram.
Gold value = Actual gold content × Pure-gold price per gram

The tola value used here follows the modern bullion convention of
approximately 11.6638125 grams per tola.
Pure Gold Value per Gram
If the reference price is already quoted per gram of fine gold, the
calculation is particularly simple. For 100% pure gold, every gram of
material represents one gram of gold.
Pure gold value = Weight in grams × Price per gram
For 999 gold, the same weight contains slightly less than the full amount
of pure gold.
10 g × 0.999 = 9.99 g actual gold
That distinction can matter when comparing very high-fineness bullion or
when calculating the theoretical recoverable metal content.
Pure Gold Value per Troy Ounce
Precious-metal markets frequently use the troy ounce for gold quotations.
One troy ounce is approximately 31.1034768 grams.
1 troy oz = 31.1034768 g
If a pure-gold price is quoted per troy ounce, the calculator converts that
quotation into a compatible price per gram before calculating the value of
the entered weight.
Pure Gold Value per Tola
The tola remains an important gold-weight unit in several markets. For
modern bullion calculations, one tola is approximately 11.6638125 grams.
1 tola = 11.6638125 g
Because historical and regional definitions of traditional units can
differ, the applicable convention should always be confirmed for a
specific transaction.
Pure Gold vs Jewellery Gold
Pure gold is different from typical jewellery alloys. Jewellery is often
intentionally alloyed with other metals to alter hardness, colour,
durability and working characteristics.
For example, 22K gold has a nominal gold fraction of 22/24, while 18K gold
has a nominal fraction of 18/24. These are not equivalent to fine gold
even though both contain substantial amounts of gold.
Fine gold
High-fineness material such as 999 or 999.9 contains a very high
proportion of gold by mass.
Jewellery alloy
Lower-karat gold contains other metals in addition to gold, so its
theoretical pure-gold content is lower for the same total weight.
Example Pure Gold Calculation
Consider 20 grams of 999.9 fine gold with a reference fine-gold price of
100 currency units per gram.
20 g × 0.9999 = 19.998 g actual gold
The theoretical metal value would then be:
19.998 g × 100 = 1,999.80 currency units
The small difference from 2,000 reflects the 999.9 fineness rather than a
full 1000 fineness assumption.
Using the Calculator for Gold Bullion
The calculator can be useful for estimating the underlying metal value of
bars, rounds and other high-fineness gold products when their weight and
fineness are known.
The theoretical metal value should not automatically be treated as the
product's market price. Bullion products can trade above or below their
underlying metal value depending on premiums, liquidity, dealer spreads,
product availability and market conditions.
Important Limitations
This calculator does not provide a live gold-market quotation. The price
must be supplied by the user.
A selected fineness is a mathematical assumption. It does not authenticate
a physical gold item or replace an assay.
Actual bullion and jewellery transactions may include premiums, discounts,
taxes, refining charges, testing costs, shipping and dealer margins.
For significant transactions, use documented weight and fineness together
with an appropriate current market quotation and, where necessary,
professional testing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is pure gold?
Pure gold refers to extremely high-fineness gold. Commercial fine gold may be
described as 999, 999.9 or another high-fineness specification.
How is pure gold value calculated?
The calculator converts the entered weight into grams, applies the selected
fineness and multiplies the resulting actual gold content by the supplied
fine-gold price per gram.
Can I calculate the value of 999 gold?
Yes. Select 999 fineness and enter the weight and applicable pure-gold price.
The calculator accounts for the 99.9% nominal gold fraction.
How many grams are in a troy ounce of pure gold?
One troy ounce is approximately 31.1034768 grams.
Can I calculate pure gold value in tola?
Yes. The calculator supports tola and uses approximately 11.6638125 grams per
modern bullion tola.
Is this a live pure gold price calculator?
No. You enter the applicable reference price manually. The calculator then
performs the mathematical valuation.
Does the result include dealer premiums or fees?
No. The result represents theoretical metal value and excludes commercial
premiums, discounts, taxes, refining costs and similar adjustments.
