Fastener Joint Stack-Up Calculator

Calculate total joint stack-up from plate, washer, spacer and gasket thicknesses, then compare the grip with nut height and required thread projection.

Joint Components

Enter only the components that form the actual joint. Zero values are ignored in the stack-up.

Fastener Dimensions

The bolt head bearing thickness is optional. For a conventional through-bolt calculation, the grip is the clamped material stack, while nut height and required thread projection are outside the grip.

Grip Length Calculation

The grip is the thickness of the material being clamped by the fastener. In this calculator it consists of the entered plate stack plus spacer or gasket material.

Plate Stack = Plate 1 + Plate 2 + Plate 3 + Plate 4
Grip Length = Plate Stack + Spacer / Gasket Thickness

Washers can be included in the total physical joint stack-up, but they are shown separately from the clamped material grip.

Total Physical Stack-Up

The total stack-up can include the clamped plates, spacers, gaskets and washers located between the bolt head and nut.

Total Stack-Up = Plate Stack + Spacer + Top Washer + Bottom Washer

Additional components should be added as part of the stack where they physically occur in the joint.

Estimated Bolt Length

A preliminary bolt length can be estimated by adding the physical joint stack to the required thread projection and any selected additional allowance.

Estimated Bolt Length = Total Stack-Up + Thread Projection + Additional Allowance

If the bolt head bearing dimension is explicitly included in the input, it is added to the target fastener length calculation as an optional allowance.

Available Bolt Check

Parameter Calculated Available / Entered Difference Status
Bolt lengths are normally selected from standardized nominal increments. The calculated target should therefore be compared with the actual available bolt size and the manufacturer's dimensional data.

Thread Projection Reference

Thread projection is the portion of threaded fastener extending beyond the nut after tightening.

Required Bolt Length ≈ Joint Stack-Up + Nut / Thread Requirements

The exact required projection depends on the fastener type, nut design, thread engagement requirements and applicable specification. This calculator uses the value entered by the user rather than selecting a standard automatically.

Important Limitations

Engineering warning: Use the calculated dimensions for preliminary planning only. Confirm the selected fastener, nut, washer, thread engagement, grip and required projection against the applicable standard and manufacturer's dimensions before fabrication or assembly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a fastener joint stack-up?
It is the combined thickness of the components occupying the fastener joint, such as plates, washers, spacers and gaskets.

What is grip length?
Grip length is generally the thickness of the material clamped by the fastener. In this calculator it is the plate stack plus any entered spacer or gasket thickness.

Are washers part of grip length?
For the purposes of this calculator, washers are reported separately from the clamped material grip but are included in the total physical stack-up.

How is the estimated bolt length calculated?
The calculator adds the total physical stack-up, required thread projection and additional allowance.

Can I include several plates?
Yes. Four plate-thickness inputs are provided, along with spacer or gasket thickness.

Does it choose a standard bolt length?
No. It calculates a target length. The final bolt should be selected from the available standardized fastener lengths and verified against the actual assembly.
