Determine a preliminary bolt grip length from the joint stack-up, washers, nut thickness, desired thread engagement and end allowance.
Joint Stack-Up
Enter every material layer that the bolt clamps. Washers and gaskets can be included separately so the stack-up is visible in the final calculation.
Thread and Bolt-Length Allowances
The finder separates grip length from total bolt length. Nut thickness, required thread engagement and protrusion are used to estimate the total bolt length needed for selection.

Grip Length Formula
The preliminary grip length is based on the complete thickness of the material stack being clamped.
The washer thickness is included only when the washer is part of the clamped stack between the bolt head or nut and the joint.
Total Bolt Length Formula
For preliminary bolt selection, total required bolt length can be estimated by adding the grip length, nut thickness, desired thread engagement, protrusion and a small selection allowance.
Includes applicable washer thickness within the stack.
Does not simply equal total bolt length.
Helps identify the appropriate fastener grip range.
Total Bolt Length
Extends beyond the clamped stack.
Must accommodate the nut.
Must provide sufficient thread engagement.
May require thread protrusion beyond the nut.
Thread Engagement
Thread engagement should be selected according to the fastener size, material combination, joint design and applicable engineering or installation specification.
This calculator does not automatically determine the required engagement. Instead, it allows the user to enter a project-specific value.
Do not use a generic thread-engagement value for a critical joint without checking the applicable fastener standard and engineering requirements.
Important Limitations
This is a preliminary bolt grip and length selection tool.
It does not identify a specific bolt standard or product.
It does not determine the required bolt diameter.
It does not calculate required thread engagement from joint strength.
It does not verify nut compatibility.
It does not verify washer compatibility.
It does not account for bolt-hole geometry.
It does not calculate preload or torque.
It does not determine structural capacity.
Actual available bolt lengths depend on the applicable fastener standard and manufacturer.
Engineering warning: Use this result for preliminary fastener selection only. Confirm the selected bolt, nut, washer, grip range, thread engagement and protrusion against the applicable fastener standard, manufacturer's dimensions and project requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is bolt grip length?
Grip length is the portion of the bolt associated with the thickness of the material stack being clamped. It is different from the overall bolt length.
Should washers be included in grip length?
Yes, when the washer is located between the bolt head or nut and the material stack and therefore contributes to the clamped stack thickness.
Does nut thickness count as grip?
No. Nut thickness is normally considered separately when estimating total bolt length.
Why is thread engagement added?
The bolt must extend far enough through the nut to provide the required engaged thread length. The required amount depends on the fastener and joint design.
Why is protrusion added?
Some joints require a specified amount of thread beyond the nut. The required protrusion depends on the fastener and installation specification.
Does the calculator select an actual standard bolt?
No. It rounds the calculated requirement to the selected length increment as a preliminary selection aid. Actual standard lengths must be checked against the applicable fastener catalog or standard.
