How Much Charging Capacity Does Your EV Fleet Need?

Estimate daily fleet charging energy, continuous charging power and the minimum number of chargers needed to replenish the fleet within a defined charging window.

Fleet charging inputs

Accounts for sharing, scheduling and practical operating margin.

Why fleet charging capacity is a scheduling problem

Fleet charging needs depend on how much energy vehicles require and how much time is available to deliver it. A large fleet can sometimes use fewer chargers when charging windows are long enough and vehicles can be sequenced intelligently.

Energy versus power

Total fleet energy determines how much electricity must be delivered. Charging-window length determines the average power needed to accomplish that work. Charger count then depends on the usable power of each charger and the amount of concurrency you permit.

Why utilization matters

A theoretical 100% charger utilization assumes continuous operation at the rated charging level. Real schedules may have vehicle arrival differences, charge tapering, connector availability or other operational gaps.

Why service capacity needs a separate check

A fleet may require fewer physical chargers than simultaneous vehicles because chargers can be shared. However, the resulting electrical demand still needs to be evaluated at the site level.

FAQs

Does one charger per vehicle always make sense?

No. Shared charging can reduce hardware requirements when vehicles have staggered availability.

Does this calculate electrical panel size?

No. It calculates charging demand and an estimated charger count only.

Can vehicles require different energy amounts?

This version uses an average energy requirement. Mixed fleets are better modeled by vehicle class or operating group.

Why include charging efficiency?

The energy source must provide more energy than the battery stores when charging losses occur.
