What this material planner calculates
The tool turns a material schedule into an itemized budget. Each item uses quantity × unit price as its base cost. A waste allowance is then added to account for cutting, handling, minor damage, offcuts or purchasing uncertainty as appropriate to the material.
Item-specific versus global waste
A global percentage is convenient when most materials share a similar allowance. An item-specific percentage is more useful when different materials have different expected waste. Entering an item-specific value overrides the global setting for that line.
Worked example
Ten units at $20 each have a base cost of $200. At 5% waste, the modeled allowance is $10 and the resulting budget is $210. If another material has its own 2% waste rate, the planner applies 2% to that item's base cost instead.
Why category totals help
Separating categories such as cable, containment, devices, panels and accessories makes procurement review easier. It also helps reveal when one material class dominates the budget.
Important purchasing distinction
A quantity estimate and a purchase order are not necessarily identical. Packaging sizes, standard lengths, minimum order quantities, supplier terms and stock availability can change what needs to be purchased. This planner models the mathematical material requirement and cost based on your entries.
Common mistakes
Use comparable unit prices. Do not multiply a length by a unit price intended for a different unit. Avoid hiding labor inside material prices if you want a clean materials estimate.
Safety and limitations
This tool does not determine what electrical materials are required by a particular design. Material selection, ratings, compatibility and installation requirements must come from the actual design and equipment documentation.
Frequently asked questions
Can waste be zero?
Yes. Set the global or item-specific waste percentage to zero when appropriate.
Can I estimate labor here?
The tool is deliberately focused on materials. Keep labor in a separate estimate for clearer cost control.
Does this optimize supplier purchasing?
No. It estimates material cost from entered quantities and prices; packaging and supplier-specific purchasing rules are outside the model.
