Why cable identification deserves its own schedule
A cable ID is a reference that should remain understandable across drawings, termination schedules, labels, testing records and maintenance documentation. This generator focuses only on that identification task.
ID construction
The default pattern combines a prefix, source, destination, system, route and sequence. Spaces and punctuation inside individual fields are normalized so that the resulting ID remains compact.
Example
Source “MSB-01”, destination “DB-02”, system “POWER”, route “TRAY-A” and sequence 7 could produce an ID similar to CBL-MSB-01-DB-02-POWER-TRAY-A-007.
Why source and destination should remain visible
A sequence number alone is difficult to interpret. A source-to-destination reference provides a much stronger cross-reference and helps avoid duplicate or ambiguous cable identifiers.
Documentation workflow
Use the generated IDs consistently in cable schedules, drawings and field labels. Once cables are installed, any changes to routing or destination should be reconciled rather than silently creating a second identifier.
Limitations and safety
This tool does not determine cable type, conductor size, ampacity, route suitability or installation compliance. Identification is documentation, not engineering verification.
Frequently asked questions
Can the same sequence number appear twice?
The tool allows it only when the complete generated identifier remains unique; duplicate full IDs should be reviewed before issue.
Does it select cable size?
No. Cable engineering information belongs to a separate design or cable schedule workflow.
Can route names be included?
Yes. Route is an explicit identification component in this generator.
