How duct sealant quantity is calculated
This calculator uses a simple geometric model: seam length multiplied by the cross-sectional area of an equivalent round bead. The result is then increased by the selected application allowance and divided by usable cartridge volume.
Base sealant = seam length × bead area
Planning cartridges = ceiling(base volume × (1 + allowance) ÷ cartridge volume)
Worked example
For 180 m of seam and a 6 mm equivalent bead, the geometric bead volume is approximately 5.09 L. With a 10% allowance and 300 mL usable per cartridge, planning quantity is 19 cartridges.
Why manufacturer's yield is important
Actual sealant consumption can differ from a mathematical bead because joints may be irregular, surfaces may absorb or displace material, and applicators may produce different bead shapes. A product's published yield or project-specific application rate is therefore usually the better procurement basis.
What this tool does not decide
It does not select sealant chemistry, fire/smoke rating, pressure class, compatibility, curing characteristics or approved application method.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use a cartridge yield instead of bead diameter?
Yes. A documented manufacturer yield is preferable; the geometric model is intended for estimation.
Should allowance be included?
A project-specific allowance can account for handling losses, tooling and irregular application. Keep it visible rather than hiding it in the bead size.
