HVAC insulation coverage

Duct Insulation Surface Calculator

Estimate insulation coverage over rectangular or round ducts, then add a visible planning allowance for cuts, laps and installation losses.

Insulation geometry

The base area follows the bare duct geometry. Thickness is an important installation parameter, but the exact developed outer area depends on the insulation build-up and overlap details.
Enter duct geometry and run length.

Surface-area formulas

A straight rectangular duct uses the perimeter of its four faces. A round duct uses circumference.

Rectangular = 2(W + H)L
Round = πDL
Planning area = base area × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)

Why this is a material-coverage tool

Insulation quantity and thermal performance are different questions. Thermal resistance depends on the insulation material, declared thermal conductivity, temperature and installed thickness. This page focuses on physical coverage only.

Worked example

A 600 × 400 mm duct over 25 m has a perimeter of 2 m and a base area of 50 m². A 7% allowance gives 53.5 m² of planning coverage.

What can increase actual material consumption

Fabrication around fittings, support interruptions, overlaps, end details and awkward cuts can all alter the purchased quantity. Compare the planning result with the product's actual roll or pack yield before ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the calculator handle round duct?

Yes. Select Round and enter its diameter.

Does insulation thickness appear in the result?

The base coverage follows the duct shape. A more detailed outer-surface model would require the insulation thickness and specific construction detail.

Does this calculate thermal resistance?

No.

Is the allowance fixed?

No. It is a project-specific planning assumption.
