How depreciation forecasting works

The forecast applies an annual percentage depreciation rate and then adds a configurable mileage effect when annual mileage exceeds the benchmark. Condition can make the annual depreciation assumption more or less severe. Because the model compounds year after year, small assumption changes can meaningfully change long-range values.

Future value = Previous value × (1 − adjusted annual depreciation rate).

Why depreciation is not a fixed universal percentage

Actual resale value depends on vehicle demand, age, supply, condition, mileage, specification, market cycles and many other factors. This tool therefore treats the depreciation rate as an explicit assumption you control.

Use scenarios instead of one forecast

For planning, compare conservative, middle and optimistic depreciation assumptions. A five-year projection at one rate should not be presented as a guaranteed price.

Mileage matters, but not mechanically alone

Higher mileage may influence buyer demand, but the economic effect varies by vehicle and market. Maintenance history and condition can offset some mileage-related concerns.

FAQs

Can I forecast more than five years?

Yes. The tool supports a configurable forecast period within a practical upper range.

Is depreciation linear?

No. This model uses annual compounding, so the absolute amount lost changes as the vehicle value changes.

Can mileage make depreciation faster?

Yes, under the configurable model. The mileage impact is an assumption rather than a universal rule.

Should I use this to price a listing?

Use it for planning, then compare the forecast with current comparable vehicles before choosing an actual asking price.
