Battery Charger Recovery-Time Calculator — Estimate Time to Restore SOC

Calculate the approximate time needed to recover a battery from its current state of charge to a target SOC using charger power and efficiency assumptions.

The model assumes approximately constant charger power and can add a user-entered taper allowance for high-SOC charging. Real charging profiles can vary considerably.
Enter current SOC, target SOC and charger power.

How battery recovery time is estimated

The energy required to move between two SOC levels equals battery capacity multiplied by the SOC difference. Charging efficiency increases the input energy required from the charger.

High-SOC taper

Many battery systems can reduce charging power near a high state of charge. This tool lets you model that as an additional time allowance rather than pretending charging remains perfectly constant.

Recovery window

Comparing calculated recovery time with the time before the next operating requirement can reveal whether the charger has sufficient recovery capability.

Limitations

Use charger and battery manufacturer's charging curves for engineering or procurement decisions.

Frequently asked questions

Can current SOC equal target SOC?

Yes. The recovery time is zero.

Can target SOC be below current SOC?

No. The tool requires a true recharge target.
