Asphalt Density Weight Converter — Convert m³ to Tonnes

Use an explicit asphalt density to turn a measured volume into mass. The tool keeps the density assumption visible rather than pretending there is one universal asphalt density.

Volume-to-mass conversion

m³
kg/m³
Use the density published or measured for the same asphalt material, condition and measurement basis. The example value is illustrative.
Enter volume and density, then calculate.

The formula is straightforward

The mass calculation is volume × density. With volume in m³ and density in kg/m³, the answer is kilograms.

mass (kg) = volume (m³) × density (kg/m³)
tonnes = kilograms ÷ 1,000

Why asphalt density varies

Mix composition, aggregate characteristics, air voids, compaction and measurement conditions can influence density. A density value is therefore an input assumption tied to a specific material and measurement basis.

For procurement reconciliation, supplier data or project-specific measurements are preferable to a generic assumed density.

Worked example

For 10 m³ at 2,350 kg/m³, estimated mass is 23,500 kg or 23.5 tonnes. Reporting the calculation alongside the density makes the result easier for another person to audit.

When this conversion is useful

Use it when a paving takeoff is volumetric but supplier invoices, truck payloads or production records use tonnes. It can also help compare two density assumptions and understand how much mass changes when the same volume is evaluated differently.
