Road pavement quantity

Asphalt Layer Volume Calculator

Calculate asphalt volume from paved area and layer thickness, then convert that volume into an estimated material mass using an explicit density assumption. See compacted geometry and adjusted procurement quantity separately.

Asphalt layer inputs

kg/m³; replace with the applicable mix density when known.
For procurement, use the density and thickness basis supplied by the mix specification, paving contractor or supplier. This calculator does not determine mix design.
Enter paved area and thickness.

Asphalt volume and mass formula

Volume = area × compacted thickness
Adjusted volume = volume × (1 + allowance)
Mass = adjusted volume × density
Tonnes = mass ÷ 1000

Thickness must match the quantity basis

A 50 mm compacted layer is not the same quantity as a 50 mm loose layer. Enter the thickness corresponding to the volume basis you are estimating.

Use supplier density when available

Different asphalt mixtures can have different densities. A generic density is useful for a planning estimate, but a project-specific mix density is preferable for procurement.

Example

For 1,200 m² at 50 mm compacted thickness, the geometric volume is 60 m³. At 2,400 kg/m³, the baseline mass is 144 tonnes before any allowance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate asphalt tonnage?

Area × thickness gives volume; volume × density gives mass.

Does density vary?

Yes, so use a project-specific value whenever available.

Should I add an allowance?

Use an explicit project allowance when appropriate.
