Admixture Dosage Calculator for Concrete Mixes

Calculate the required quantity of a concrete chemical admixture from cementitious material mass and a documented dosage rate. See batch mass, optional liquid volume and how a dosage change affects the final quantity.

Enter the approved dosage basis

kg/L when liquid volume is required.
Optional alternate dosage for sensitivity analysis.
Use the dosage basis supplied by the product manufacturer or approved mixture documentation. The calculator does not recommend a dosage.

How admixture dosage is calculated

When the dosage is expressed as a percentage of cementitious material, multiply binder mass by dosage percentage. When the product is documented as a quantity per 100 kg of binder, the same relationship can be written directly on that basis.

Admixture mass = cementitious mass × dosage % ÷ 100

For liquid admixtures, the estimated volume can then be calculated from product density.

Worked example

For 400 kg of cementitious material and a documented dosage of 0.8%:

400 × 0.008 = 3.20 kg admixture

At a product density of 1.10 kg/L, the corresponding liquid volume is about 2.91 L.

Why dosage is not universal

Chemical admixtures interact with the concrete mixture. Cement, supplementary cementitious materials, aggregate characteristics, temperature, water content and other admixtures can influence the response. ASTM C494 specifically evaluates admixture performance with proposed concreting materials and mixture conditions.

Technical context: ASTM C494/C494M-24.

Percentage versus product quantity

A percentage is a dosage relationship, not a container measurement. Two liquid products at the same percentage by mass can require different litres if their densities differ.

For batching, always confirm whether the supplier's instructions are expressed by mass, by volume, per 100 kg, per 100 lb or another basis.

Dosage sensitivity

Small percentage changes can produce meaningful quantity changes on large batches. This is why the tool includes an alternate dosage comparison rather than showing only one number.

Common errors

Using cement mass when the supplier specifies cementitious mass: include the defined binder components.

Mixing kg and lb: use the same mass basis.

Converting mass to litres without density: product density is required.

Treating the calculator as a dosage recommendation: use the approved product information and trial-batch data.

Limitations

This page converts a documented dosage rate into quantity. It does not determine optimum dosage, compatibility, water reduction, setting response, slump retention or performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much admixture is needed for 400 kg binder at 0.8%?

3.20 kg.

Can I convert admixture kilograms to litres?

Yes, when the product density in kg/L is known.

Should SCMs be included in the dosage basis?

Only when the approved product documentation defines the dosage on a cementitious-material basis that includes them.

Can one dosage work for every concrete?

No. Mixture and field conditions can change admixture performance.

Does this calculator select an admixture dosage?

No. It only converts the dosage you enter into a quantity.
