Panel seam geometry

Plywood Seam Layout Planner for Staggered Panel Joints

Generate a row-by-row panel layout with an explicit seam offset. The result shows how many panels each row uses and where the seam between full panels and the final cut falls.

Surface and panel inputs

The planner assumes rectangular panels arranged in horizontal rows. It does not establish structural fastening, unsupported joint conditions, expansion gaps or required panel staggering for a specific assembly.
Enter surface and panel dimensions.

How staggered panel seams are planned

The surface is divided into panel-height rows. Each row starts at an offset from the reference edge, then repeats panel length until the opposite edge is reached.

Rows = ceiling(surface height ÷ panel height)
Row coverage = offset + repeated panel lengths + final cut piece
Total panels = sum of full and partial panels across rows

Why use a visible seam schedule?

A seam layout is more useful than a simple panel count because the installer needs to know where seams occur. Alternating or controlled offsets can prevent several rows from producing the same seam line.

Offset selection

The offset is an input to the layout, not a universal recommendation. Some assemblies have minimum joint staggering requirements or panel installation rules. Enter the offset required by the particular application.

Edge cuts

The final panel segment can be short. A very small final piece may be undesirable in practice, in which case the layout should be rebalanced by adjusting the starting position or panel orientation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the calculator create alternating seams?

Yes. Each row uses the supplied offset and then repeats the panel length.

Can the final panel be partial?

Yes. Its calculated length is shown separately.

Does the planner include installation gaps?

No; this version focuses on seam geometry.

Is the result a structural sheathing design?

No.
