Check whether the hour, minute and second hands on your watch are properly aligned. Use the interactive dial below to compare with your watch and learn when slight misalignment is normal and when it may need attention.

Perfect hand alignment is the goal of every watchmaker, but small deviations are common even on high-end watches:
• ±1° to 2° – Usually not noticeable and considered normal
• Slight second-hand wobble – Common on many movements and not a defect
• Hour hand slightly off at exact 12:00 – Often within acceptable tolerance
Larger or uneven misalignment can indicate an issue:
• Hands clearly pointing in different directions when they should stack
• Hands touching each other or the dial/crystal
• Sudden change after a knock or service
• Hands that were previously straight and are now obviously off
In these cases a watchmaker can usually re-align the hands relatively easily during a service or as a standalone job.
1. Set the time so that the minute hand is exactly at 12 (or use the hacking feature if available).
2. Look straight down at the watch from above.
3. Check whether the hour hand sits cleanly under the minute hand and whether the second hand (if present) also lines up.
4. Compare the degree of offset with the interactive tool above.
Are slightly misaligned watch hands a defect? Not always. Most manufacturers allow a small tolerance. Only clearly visible or functional problems (hands touching, large offset) are usually considered faults.
Can hand alignment be fixed? Yes. A qualified watchmaker can remove the hands and re-fit them correctly. It is a normal part of many services.
Why do second hands sometimes wobble? A small amount of side-to-side play is common on many movements and is not usually a problem unless the hand hits the dial or another hand.
Does hand alignment affect timekeeping? Minor cosmetic misalignment does not affect accuracy. Only if the hands are catching on each other or the dial can timekeeping be disturbed.
Should I worry about factory new watches? Even brand-new watches can show tiny offsets. If the misalignment is obvious under normal viewing, contact the seller or manufacturer.
