VIN Check Digit Validator
Check whether a 17-character VIN passes the standard character restrictions and whether its ninth-position check digit matches the calculated result under the applicable check-digit method.

How the VIN check digit works
For VIN systems that use the standardized check-digit calculation, each VIN character is converted to a numeric value and multiplied by a position-specific weight. The weighted values are summed, divided by 11, and the remainder determines the expected ninth character; a remainder of 10 is represented by X.
What a valid result means
A matching check digit means the characters are mathematically consistent with the check-digit algorithm. It does not prove that the VIN belongs to the vehicle you are examining, that the VIN is genuine, or that the vehicle has a particular history.
Why a failed check is useful
A failure can reveal a typing error, a transcription mistake or a VIN that needs additional verification. Recheck the physical VIN and all records before ordering parts or relying on the identifier.
Important scope
The calculation is intended for the applicable standardized 17-character VIN format. It should not be used to infer a legal or registration conclusion for an older or non-standard vehicle identifier.
FAQs
What characters are excluded?
I, O and Q are excluded from the standard VIN character set to reduce visual ambiguity with numerals and other characters.
Does a valid check digit prove the VIN is genuine?
No. It only checks mathematical consistency. Physical verification and appropriate records are still necessary.
Can I use this before ordering parts?
Yes as a typo check, but detailed parts selection should still be based on the complete verified vehicle identity and application data.
