Transformer Energy Loss Comparison Tool
Compare the annual energy impact of no-load and load losses across three transformer choices using the same operating assumptions. The tool ranks options by modeled annual loss cost.

Annual loss comparison
| Option | No-load energy | Load-loss energy | Total loss energy | Annual loss cost | Rank |
|---|
Methodology
No-load loss is multiplied by all energized hours. Load loss is multiplied by the annual hours represented by the selected operating point. The two components are then added.
Total annual loss energy = No-load loss × Energized hours + Load loss × Load hours
Annual loss cost = Total loss energy × Electricity price
Why comparing both loss types matters
A transformer with lower load loss is not automatically the lowest-loss option over a full year. No-load loss accumulates continuously while the transformer is energized, so the relative importance of each loss type depends on the operating profile.
Keep the comparison like-for-like
Use loss data from comparable transformer specifications and use the same annual operating assumptions for every option. Changing the load profile between options would mix equipment differences with operating differences.
Limitations
- Load loss is represented by one operating point.
- Temperature-dependent loss changes are not modeled.
- Taxes, demand charges and transformer purchase cost are excluded.
- Technical selection should consider more than loss economics.
FAQs
Can two options have the same loss cost?
Yes. The table will show equal or nearly equal modeled results.
Why is load-loss time separate?
Because no-load loss and load-dependent loss do not accumulate in the same way.
Does the tool select the cheapest transformer to buy?
No. It ranks annual operating loss cost only.
Can I compare more than three units?
This page focuses on three options so the comparison remains easy to audit. Additional choices can be screened with repeat runs.
