Estimate metal framing studs, track and opening framing for a steel-stud wall from wall dimensions and stud spacing.
Wall Dimensions
Door and Window Openings
Opening dimensions are used for preliminary material estimating. Actual jamb, header, sill and cripple framing depends on the framing system and design.

Steel Stud Quantity Formula
The basic stud count is based on the wall length and selected centre-to-centre stud spacing. One additional end position is included.
Base Studs = Ceiling(Wall Length ÷ Stud Spacing) + 1
For two-sided partition framing, the quantity is multiplied by two. Additional studs can then be added around doors and windows.
Total Studs Before Waste = Base Studs + Opening Stud Allowance
Stud Quantity With Waste = Ceiling(Total Studs Before Waste × (1 + Waste %))
Metal Track Estimate
The preliminary track estimate includes one continuous track run at the top and one at the bottom of the wall. When openings are entered, optional header and sill allowances are added.
Base Track = Wall Length × 2
Track stock pieces are calculated by dividing the required track length by the entered stock length and rounding upward.
Each opening can be assigned an additional number of studs for preliminary jamb and reinforcement estimating.
Opening Studs = (Doors + Windows) × Extra Studs per Opening
The optional header/sill allowance estimates additional track around openings using the entered opening widths.
Important Limitations
This is a preliminary metal framing material estimator.
It does not determine the structural stud size or gauge.
It does not check stud axial capacity.
It does not check wind pressure.
It does not check wall deflection.
It does not design bracing or bridging.
It does not determine screw spacing.
It does not design headers or lintels.
It does not account for every possible framing detail.
Opening framing allowances are simplified estimates.
Actual quantities depend on the selected framing system and construction details.
It does not replace project drawings or engineering specifications.
Use the result for preliminary estimating only. Final stud, track, opening framing, bracing and connection requirements should follow the project drawings, manufacturer's framing system and applicable building requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does the Steel Stud Quantity Calculator calculate?
It estimates the number of metal studs and track required for a wall based on wall dimensions, stud spacing, openings and waste.
Does it calculate track as well as studs?
Yes. It estimates top and bottom track and converts the required track length into stock pieces.
Can I include doors and windows?
Yes. Enter the number and dimensions of doors and windows. The calculator adds a preliminary opening-framing allowance.
What does framing sides mean?
Single-sided framing estimates one stud line. Two-sided or partition framing estimates two stud lines.
Does the calculator choose the correct stud size?
No. Stud size, thickness and gauge must be selected according to the project requirements and framing system.
Is the result suitable as a final bill of materials?
No. It is a preliminary estimate. Final quantities should be taken from the actual wall layouts and construction details.
