Steel Stair Material Estimator

Estimate structural steel quantities for a straight-run stair, including stringers, treads, landing framing, supports, railing and connection steel.

Stair Geometry

Stringer Steel

Enter the approximate mass per unit length of the selected stringer section. The estimator uses the inclined stair length plus the entered allowance.

Treads and Landing

Support and Railing Steel

Material Allowance

Enter the stair dimensions and section weights to calculate the material estimate.

How the Steel Stair Estimate Works

For a straight-run stair, the inclined stringer length is estimated from the total vertical rise and horizontal run. The estimator then multiplies that length by the entered stringer section weight and the number of stringers.

Stringer Length = √(Rise² + Run²)
Stringer Weight = Stringer Length × Section Weight × Number of Stringers

Tread steel is estimated from the number of treads, tread depth and the entered tread section weight. Landing steel is estimated from landing area and the entered landing framing weight per square metre or square foot.

Steel Stair Material Components

A steel stair material takeoff can contain substantially more than the main stringers. Depending on the stair design, the fabrication package can include tread supports, landing framing, brackets, cleats, connection plates, handrails, guardrails, posts and other miscellaneous steel.

Material Waste Allowance

The waste allowance provides a practical estimating margin for cutting offcuts, fabrication losses, small unusable remnants and similar material consumption. It should not be interpreted as a guaranteed scrap percentage.

Actual steel purchasing requirements depend on stock lengths, available plate sizes, nesting, standard section lengths and the fabrication shop's cutting plan.

Steel Weight and Cost

The estimator uses the entered section mass per unit length or area rather than trying to infer the exact structural profile. This makes it useful for preliminary material estimating when the selected steel sections are already known.

Estimated Steel Cost = Total Estimated Steel Weight × Steel Price per kg

The material price is an estimate only. Actual steel pricing varies by grade, section, thickness, supplier, quantity, location and market conditions.

Important Structural Limitations

Do not use this estimator as a substitute for structural design or code compliance. Final member sizes, connections, loads and safety requirements should be checked by a qualified engineer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What type of stair does this calculator estimate?
It is designed primarily for preliminary estimates of straight-run steel stairs.

How many stringers should I enter?
Enter the number specified by the preliminary stair design. Two stringers is a common starting assumption for a basic straight stair, but the appropriate arrangement depends on the actual design.

Can I estimate stair steel using section weight in kg/m?
Yes. Enter the mass per metre of the selected stringer, tread or railing section.

Does the calculator include the landing?
Yes. Enter the landing dimensions and the estimated landing framing weight per unit area.

Does it include railings?
Yes. Railing section weight, stair length, number of railing sides and an extra allowance can be included.

Does the estimate include steel waste?
Yes. A configurable fabrication waste percentage is added to the calculated steel quantity.

Can this be used for an industrial steel staircase?
It can provide a preliminary quantity estimate, but industrial stairways require project-specific structural and code checks before fabrication.

Can this calculate the exact steel required for fabrication?
No. Final procurement should be based on approved fabrication drawings, section sizes, plate thicknesses, stock lengths and a detailed bill of materials.
